Sport Premium
PE and Sport play a very important part in the life of St George’s School and at least two, 1 hour sessions per week, are dedicated to physical activity in the curriculum. We believe that physical education and sport contribute to the holistic development of young people and through participation in sport and physical education, young people learn more about key values such as teamwork, fair play and respect for themselves and others.
There is significant evidence to show the positive effects of sport and exercise on children’s physical health, growth and development. Furthermore, sport also provides a healthy environment for young people to learn how to deal with competition and how to cope with both winning and losing.
In April 2013, the Departments for Education, Health, and Culture, Media and Sport announced joint new funding of £150 million to support the delivery of PE and school sport. Funding will be allocated to all state-maintained secondary, primary, middle and special schools (including non-maintained special schools), academies and pupil referral units with primary aged pupils. We received £12,000 in two instalments in the last academic year and the same again for this academic year. This money has been ring fenced to use solely on PE.
During last year and this current year we have used the sports grant money in different areas to improve the quality of PE and Sport provision in the following ways:
- Providing cover staff to release teachers for professional development in PE and sport to upskill their confidence and knowledge in PE.
- Employing a qualified dance teacher to team teach with every teacher in KS1 and KS2 to upskill and develop their knowledge and understanding of good dance lessons. This will take place in the autumn term.
- Upskilling every Lunchtime playleaders through a training course. This will include ideas on how to use the new playground markings during play/lunch times.
- Up skilling all foundation and KS1 staff to use the newly painted ‘take ten’ activity area in the infant playground.
- Employ a qualified rugby coach to work alongside our afterschool tag rugby club.
- Using the funding to support regular sport tournaments, festivals and competitions for pupils of all ages.
- Provide additional activity-based play at lunchtimes
- Entering children into different leagues and competitions organised by the Enfield P.E Team and local clubs.
- Training and developing young sports leaders in upper Key Stage 2 through partnership the Enfield P.E Team.
- Hiring different professional sports coaches to teach the children different sports during curriculum time.
