Mathematics

Number (incl. Place Value, Addition, Subtraction, Multiplication, Division, Fractions, Percentages and Decimals).

Geometry (Shapes, Position and Direction).

Measurement (Time, Length, Volume and Capacity).

Algebra.

Mental Arithmetic. Numbers multiples, factors, patterns and sequence of numbers up to a million and beyond.  Rounding and adjusting. Reviewing multiplication and division involving decimal numbers.  Fractions, decimals and percentages. Time - including reading timetables and converting to 24 hour clock.  Statistics and data handling- constructing and reading various charts/graphs. Measurement, calculating area and perimeter volume and capacity. Properties of shape and identifying nets. Position and direction and co-ordinates. Problem solving. Ratio and proportion. Roman numerals. 

Literacy

Fiction – Historical stories (War Horse), significant authors.

Non-Fiction – Recounts, instructions and explanations, blogs and reports.

Poetry – Choral/performance poems, narrative poems, villainous characters.

Vocabulary and structures appropriate for formal speech and writing, including subjective forms.  Make comparisons within and across books. To explain and discuss their understanding of what they have read, including formal presentations and debates. Creative writing – composition of writing- settings, characters and atmosphere and integrating dialogue by identifying the audience and the purpose of the writing. Studying different forms of literature -Shakespeare to modern authors including traditional tales, including Shakespeare workshop and theatre visit. Prepare and perform poems and plays, show understanding through intonation, tone and volume so that the meaning is clear to the audience. Grammar, spelling and dictation. 

Science

Light

How We See: Children revise their previous knowledge about light discussing sources of light and how the human body sees, making their own model and educational programme. Reflecting Light: Children discuss accurate definitions of reflection before investigating the effects of mirrors on writing and shapes. Refraction: Children undertake a range of investigations that demonstrate how light is refracted when passing through water and other mediums. Light Spectrum: Children investigate how a transparent prism bends light to show the colour spectrum. Filters: Children investigate how coloured filters affect the appearance of objects seen through them, and create secret messages that can only be seen using certain filters.

 

Electricity

Children assess their knowledge from previous years' studies of electricity in a quiz before learning about the history of electricity, and then sorting household objects based on the impact electricity has had on them. Circuits and Symbols: Children learn to interpret and draw circuit symbols. Volts: Children learn about the difference between current and voltage. Components: Children study how changing individual components has an effect on the rest of the circuit, e.g. longer/shorter wire, number of bulbs, number of components, etc.

The Vikings in Britain: The children will explain when and where the Vikings came from and why they raided Britain including the reasons why they settled and invaded. Anglo Saxon Kings: The children will compare the significance of Anglo-Saxon Kings during the Viking Period. Danegeld

The children will learn who King Ethelred II was and say when and why Danegeld was introduced.

Viking Life: The children will identify and explain key aspects of Viking life
