Art and Design at St George's Catholic Primary School

St George's is dedicated to providing a well-rounded education that aligns with our Catholic ethos and values. At the heart of our approach to Art and Design is a commitment to cultivating creativity, critical thinking, and a deep appreciation for the arts.

Nurturing Creativity and Confidence

Through our creative Art curriculum, we empower our pupils to observe the world around them, explore their ideas, and express themselves creatively. Our children are given ample opportunities to experiment with a variety of materials and techniques, including drawing, painting, sculpture, and design.

By becoming proficient in these artistic disciplines, our pupils develop the confidence to take risks, problem-solve, and bring their unique visions to life. We believe that the process of creating art is just as important as the final product, as it fosters a growth mindset and a deep sense of personal accomplishment.

Connecting to the Wider World

In line with our school's vision and values, we encourage our pupils to explore global art and artists, broadening their cultural awareness and understanding. Through the study of diverse artistic traditions and the historical development of various art forms, our children gain a deeper appreciation for the richness and diversity of human expression.

Fulfilling the National Curriculum

Our Art and Design curriculum is carefully designed to fulfil the statutory requirements outlined in the national curriculum (2014). Pupils are given opportunities to observe, analyse, and evaluate creative works, using the language of art, craft, and design. This critical engagement with the arts helps to develop their artistic literacy and their ability to think critically about the world around them. We use the KAPOW scheme of work to help structure our curriculum, ensuring we fulfil national curriculum requirements and provide a progression of skills for the pupils.

Enriching the Whole Child

At St George's, we believe that the arts have the power to enrich the lives of our pupils, both academically and personally. By fostering a love for art and design, we aim to provide our children with a well-rounded education that nurtures their creativity, critical thinking, and overall well-being. As they progress through our school, we are confident that our pupils will leave St George's with a deep appreciation for the arts and the confidence to express themselves in meaningful and fulfilling ways.
