Computing

“A high-quality computing education equips pupils to use computational thinking and creativity to understand and change the world.”

Computing Programme of Study, DfE, 2013.

At St George’s school, we deliver the Computing programme of study for EYFS, KS1 and KS2 with support from the ‘Kapow’ computing scheme of work. The scheme covers all that is required from the Computing programme of study while providing ample opportunity for creativity, collaboration and helping children understand the implications of technology.

We aim for our pupils to achieve a deep understanding of the modern world and the technology that supports it. We wish for all children to be digitally literate and to become a supportive and functioning member of a rapidly changing modern society. We offer an engaging, safe and supportive environment for our pupils to explore and understand different technological mediums such as Interactive Whiteboards, Laptops, Tablets, Computers, Internet, E-mail, Coding, Espresso, DB Primary and much more.

We have two fully functional computer suites that provide children with ample opportunity to learn and explore the capabilities and limitations computing. Each class has access to the large computer suite for an hour a week and our smaller suite is available to smaller groups of children to use for focussed activities. Each phase is also equipped with a standalone computer to support children with regular classroom learning as well as providing opportunities for specific learners to find more accessible ways of accessing the curriculum. We also have a full class set of iPads that can be used for classroom research, stop motion animation, and a range of other activities stretching across the curriculum.

In a rapidly changing society, educating children in online safety is one of our main priorities. We start each new term with a refresher lesson on the do’s and don’ts of staying safe online. We aim to stay abreast of latest changes on social media and technological developments to support children in staying as safe as possible when online.
