Music

"He who sings, prays twice",  St Augustine.

Our aim is that all children leave St George's having experienced the enjoyment, engagement and enrichment that music can offer. This can open a wealth of opportunities in secondary school and beyond into later life. We ensure that our music curriculum is broad and meaningful, ensuring that all pupils experience playing a tuned instrument, reading basic musical notation, experiencing live musical theatre and exposure to knowing how local musicians and composers have been influential in the world of music.

Mr Cox is our inspiring music teacher. Using his enthusiasm and experience, he ensures that the national curriculum is fully covered and built upon, creating an exciting curriculum and a wealth of enrichment activities.

Each class has a weekly curriculum music lesson with emphasis on encouraging the children's listening, composing and performing skills. From Year 2 upwards the children have an opportunity to learn to play a musical instrument in the music lesson.

The highlight of many children's journey through St George's is the Year 6 performance in the summer term. Shows such as Aladdin, Matilda and The Lion King have impressed parents and visitors alike.

We currently have individual children learning to play the violin, piano, keyboard and guitar through our partnership with "Enfield Music Service".

St George's also has choirs and a school band.

Singing is also an important part of school life, and this enhances our Celebration of the Word (assemblies), Masses and weekly Hymn Practice. We host a popular singing festival with our partner deanery schools, benefitting from performing and enjoying the experience of singing communally with children from other schools . Yr1 and Yr4 take part in a singing project each year hosted by Enfield Music Service. The children learn vocal techniques and new repertoire culminating in a performance for parents. Each year, children have the chance to experience the thrill of being part of the 'Young Voices' choir at the O2 Arena.
