Tests

Tests at St George's Catholic Primary School

As a Voluntary Aided Primary School, we are proud to follow the OFSTED inspection framework and provide a high-quality education for all our pupils. Our curriculum is broad and balanced, with an emphasis on children enjoying and being engaged with their learning.

However, tests and assessments are important activities that allow us to officially measure the progress of our pupils at certain points throughout their educational journey. These tests help us ensure that our pupils are on track to reach their full potential and identify any areas where additional support may be needed.

Mandatory Assessments

Reception Baseline Assessment (RBA)

All children starting in our Reception classes will complete the RBA within the first 6 weeks of the academic year. This assessment provides a snapshot of where each child is at the start of their school journey, helping us to tailor their learning experiences accordingly.

Phonics Screening Check (Year 1)

In Year 1, all pupils will participate in the Phonics Screening Check. This assessment helps us identify children who may need further support in developing their phonics skills, which are essential for reading and writing.

End of Key Stage 1 Tests (Year 2)

At the end of Key Stage 1, pupils in Year 2 take optional national tests in English and Maths. These tests provide valuable information about each child's attainment and progress, allowing us to plan for their continued development.

Multiplication Tables Check (Year 4)

In Year 4, all pupils will complete the Multiplication Tables Check. This assessment helps us ensure that our pupils have a strong grasp of their times tables, which are crucial for success in Maths.

End of Key Stage 2 Tests 'SATs' (Year 6)

As our pupils reach the end of their primary education in Year 6, they will take part in the End of Key Stage 2 Tests, commonly known as SATs. These national assessments measure attainment in English (Reading, and Spelling, Grammar and Punctuation) and Maths, providing us with important data to support the transition to secondary school.

Supporting Our Pupils

At St George's, we believe that tests and assessments are valuable tools that help us understand the progress and needs of our pupils. However, we also recognise that tests can be a source of anxiety for some children. That's why we work closely with our families to ensure that our pupils feel supported and prepared for these important activities.

Parents are able to access leaflets that provide more details about each of the mandatory assessments. These can be downloaded below, and we encourage all parents to review the information and speak with their child's teacher if they have any questions or concerns.

By working together as a school community, we can help our pupils approach tests with confidence, knowing that they are equipped with the knowledge and skills to succeed. After all, our motto is to "follow in the footsteps of Jesus" – and that means supporting one another every step of the way.
