Year 5 - Spring

Mathematics

Number and place value: Read, write, order and compare numbers to at least 1 000 000 and round any number up to 1 000 000 to the nearest 10, 100, 1000, 10 000 and 100 000. Count forwards or backwards in steps of powers of 10 for any given number up to 1 000 000.  Interpret negative numbers in context.

Addition and Subtraction: Subtract numbers mentally.

Subtract whole numbers with more than 4 digits, including decimals. Use rounding to check answers to calculations

Geometry, property of shape: Estimate and compare acute, obtuse and reflex angles.   Draw, measure and identify angles.  Measure and calculate the perimeter of composite rectilinear shapes in centimetres and metres. Calculate and compare the area of rectangles (including squares) and estimate the area of irregular shapes.

Multiplication and division: Divide numbers up to four digits by a one-digit number using short division and interpret remainders.  Multiply numbers up to four digits by a one- or two-digit number; using a formal written method

Fractions, decimals and percentages: Compare, order, add and subtract fractions whose denominators are all multiples of the same number.  Recognise and use thousandths and relate them to tenths and hundredths. Read and write decimal numbers as fractions. Round decimals with two decimal places to the nearest whole number and to one decimal place.  Read, write, order and compare numbers with up to three decimal places.  Practise adding and subtracting decimals, including a mix of whole; numbers and decimals.  Recognise the per cent symbol (%) and understand that per cent relates to ‘number of parts per hundred’.  Write percentages as a fraction and as a decimal.  Make connections between percentages, fractions and decimals.

Measurement: Convert between different units of metric measure. Understand and use approximate equivalences between metric units and common imperial units.

Statistics: Solve comparison, sum and difference problems using information presented in a line graph.  Complete, read and interpret information in tables.

Literacy

Fiction: stories from other Cultures – cross curricular with History – Maya topic. Short stories: spooky stories.

Non-fiction: Recounts – diary writing and articles from books, newspapers and magazines – cross curricular with Science – The Earth and Beyond. Formal and in-formal – non-chronological text – letters. Instructional and Explanations texts.

Spellings: National Curriculum Yr. 5, Term 2 recommended spellings; root words; suffixes; using a dictionary and thesaurus.

Grammar: converting nouns to adjectives; adverbials of time, place and number; parenthesis; use adverbials for cohesion; expanded noun phrases; embedded clauses; relative pronouns; clauses; subordinate clauses; imperative and tenses of verbs; plurals.

Speaking, listening and presenting.

Science

Earth and beyond: Planets of our solar system and their movement and orbit of the sun; rotation of the Earth on its own axis – linking to day and night; sunrise and sunset; the phases of the moon.

Forces: Recognise and identify different forces; friction and measuring with a force meter; effects of gravity, air resistance, and water resistance on an objects movement, direction and shape; the purpose and use of simple mechanism including pulleys, levers and gears.

Art and Design

Maya Art and Sculpture – creating Maya hieroglyphs; drawing a 2D Maya Statue/stelae and annotating symbols/features with meaning; using clay to sculpture a 3d Maya statue.

Design and Technology

Design and make a hat: The history of hats; designing for a purpose; importance of material.

History

Mayan Civilization: Identify the location of ancient Mayan cities; characteristics of and facts about Mayan gods; Mayan number system; food which the Mayans grew and ate; study sources and artefacts.

 

Geography

Human and Physical aspects for a region in South America – The Amazon Basin: Identify location and gather facts about the region; climate; how people live and use the rainforest vegetation; effects of agriculture and industrialisation, conservation.

PHSE

Internet Safety - understanding how to keep safe online and exploring how the media present information.

Health and wellbeing – understanding what positively and negatively affects physical, mental and emotional health.

Learning how to make informed choices.

Relationships - to recognise what constitutes a positive, healthy relationship and develop the skills to form and maintain positive and healthy relationships.

Living in the wider world - to research, discuss and debate topical issues, problems and events that are of concern to them.

Computing

We are Game Developers: use a coding software to create a simple game for a purpose; write procedures/algorithms; debug/solve problems.

We are Web Developers: know how searches and page ranking works; design and create a web page with an educational purpose using a webpage designer; understand copyright and bias.

Exploring sound sources – The Planets;

Exploring lyrics and melody.

P.E. & Games

Outdoor games - Development of games skills.

Fitness and conditioning.  Daily mile – fit in fifteen minutes challenge

Indoor PE – Formation in Historical Dance.

Create and perform simple dances that attempt to focus on the style of the dance.  Display the ability to count to the phrasing of music.  Take part in group dances.

Swimming – develop confident swimming skills and water safety.

Spanish

Learn the names of planets and adjectives to describe these planets. Focus on gender and noun/adjective agreement. Develop writing skills by using words and phrases to describe each planet. Develop reading skills by reading a story in Spanish about planets.
