Year 6 - Spring

Mathematics

Mental Arithmetic. Numbers multiples, factors, patterns and sequence of numbers up to a million and beyond.  Rounding and adjusting. Reviewing multiplication and division involving decimal numbers.  Fractions, decimals and percentages. Time including: reading timetables and converting to 24-hour clock.  Statistics and data handling- constructing and reading various charts/graphs. Measurement, calculating area and perimeter volume and capacity. Properties of shape and identifying nets. Position and direction and co-ordinates. Problem solving. Ratio and proportion. Roman numerals.

Language

Vocabulary and structures appropriate for formal speech and writing, including subjective forms.  Make comparisons within and across books. To explain and discuss their understanding of what they have read, including formal presentations and debates. Identifying audience and writing for a range of purposes: Reports, narrative, descriptive, recount, formal and informal letters, instruction, play scripts and explanation texts. Focusing on the composition of writing such as settings, characters, atmosphere, and integrating dialogue. Studying different forms of literature - Modern books themed on wartime historical events (cross-curricular history). Prepare and perform poems and plays, show understanding through intonation, tone and volume so that the meaning is clear to the audience. Grammar, spelling and dictation.

Science

Evolution and Inheritance: Adaption, Evolution, Theory for Evolution including humans, Human Intervention and Inheritance.

Living Things and their Habitats: Classifying plants and animals, Linnaean System and Microorganisms.

French

To learn food vocabulary. To develop conversational skills through role-play.to develop reading and writing skills by reading a food order and writing your own order. To learn vocabulary for direction and distances, nationalities and famous people. 

History

World War Two in London and WW2 Experience at Gunpowder Mills including follow up work such as the Home Front; air-raids; life as an evacuee; women in wartime and rationing.

Geography

Isle of Wight (coastal focus): research an island in the British Isles, physical and human features in the British Isles, Research famous landmarks, locate an area on a range of maps, and discuss the similarities and differences using geographical language.

Computing

Coding - Scratch: The children will follow instructions to create a game including things such as sound, movement, appearance and characters; Espresso Coding (The children will plan and create their own app for a purpose). Cross-curricular work (Literacy and Numeracy) using a range of platforms such as: Purple Mash, DB Primary, BBC Bitesize, Interactive resources and Number Gym.

Art and Design

Experimental Typography: The children will research experimental typography and discover about artists and their work; they will plan and create illustrated lettering which reflects the meaning of that word.

Design Technology

WW2 Food Ration Recipes. The children will research, plan, produce and evaluate a wartime recipe using rationed ingredients.

Music

Singing developing repertoire. Listening, responding.

PSHCE Emotional Health – Coping with stress and change

P.E. & Games

Basic skills leading up to Athletics practice.  Football and Tennis skills. Regular ‘fit in 15’ running challenge. Gymnastics. Lessons linked to Borough Scheme and through specialist sports teacher.

Religious Education

Exploring the Mass: The Bread of Life, The New Covenant, The Beginning of Mass, The Offertory at Mass, The Consecration, Holy Communion, The Eucharist (source and summit of Life) and the Blessed Sacrament.

Jesus the Messiah: Big Questions, Identity of Jesus, Journey to Jerusalem, Holy Thursday, Good Friday, Easter Sunday and Holy Week in the Church.

Throughout each topic, children will explore different sources of revelations; linking traditions, personal experience, Scripture readings and Creation. Children will take part in Mass, Reconciliation, Assemblies and Acts of Worship.
